The first of the seven nights, exactly as it appears in the devotional. The other six are yours with the set.
Night One: Come Forth as Gold
"But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Job 23:10
Job spoke these words from the middle of the ashes, not after them. He had looked for God on every side and found only silence, and still he said it: He knows the way that I take. The furnace had not erased him from God’s sight. It had placed him in God’s hands. Gold does not go into the fire because it is worthless. It goes in because it is worth refining. Whatever this season is burning away, it began with a God who counted you precious.
Notice that Job does not say if He tries me, but when He hath tried me. The trial is not a question mark over your life; it is a comma in a sentence God is still writing, and the end of the sentence is already fixed: I shall come forth as gold. You do not have to see the way out tonight. He knows the way that you take, and He knows the way through. Let that knowledge carry what your own understanding cannot, and go to sleep held.
Father, You know the way that I take when I cannot see it myself. Refine me without wasting the pain, and keep the end of this in Your hands. Tonight I will rest on Your word: I shall come forth as gold. Amen.
